Brooklin Bears

The Brooklin Bears Junior Boys rugby team won their second consecutive LOSSA Championship this year. The team won the gold medal as Bantams last year and repeated this year as Juniors. The Bears started the year off by winning the Thomas A. Stewart tournament in Peterborough and went on to finish first in their division in the regular season before capturing the LOSSA title. The team continued their success at the 2019 Barbarian Cup in Fergus. After going 4-0 and winning their pool on the first day the Bears lost a heartbreaking semi-final game to Collingwood ultimately finishing fourth in the province. Congratulations Bears on another great season!

Whitby Wild U10

The Whitby Wild U10 ringette team celebrate gold, at the 40th Annual Whitby Ringette Tournament, Sunday Jan 6.  “These players make me so proud, Coach Greg Harper said after the final. "They have worked so hard this season. They deserve this.” The 12 players, ranging in age from seven to nine, went through the tournament losing only one nail-biting game 10-11 to eventual finalist Sunderland. It was, therefore, a packed arena that got to enjoy the return match as Whitby Wild rebounded from that earlier loss to take the championship game by a score of 6-4.

Whitby Wildcats Minor Atom A

We wish to congratulate the Minor Atom A White Whitby Wildcats on an outstanding hockey season. The players have come together and put T.E.A.M. at the centre of their game. Their motto of "Together Everyone Achieves More" led the boys to an incredible season with 21 wins, 5 ties and only 2 losses ranking them 1st overall during the regular season.  The T.E.A.M. also won an early bird tournament to kick off the year, were finalists in two others and captured gold by winning the Pickering Spring Thaw tournament earlier this month. Congrats to the excellent coaching staff and players of the Minor Atom A White T.E.A.M!

Brooklin High School Varsity Girls Team

The Brooklin Bears have started the 2017 season the same way that they ended last season--on a winning note. The girls are once again the team to beat in LOSSA and have yet to taste defeat in regular season play. The Bears hosted the first ever Girls Elite 8 high school hockey tournament earlier in December. The goal of the tournament was to see some of the top teams from Durham, York and Peel Regions competing against each other. The Bears faced a very strong team in the finals from St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic High School in Aurora. After trading goals in the first period Brooklin took the lead in the second and never looked back. The final score ended up 4-1 for Brooklin. The girls and coaching staff were very happy to win their own tournament in the first year and are looking forward to defending their LOSSA title later this winter.

Congratulations to the Brooklin Bears Varsity girls hockey team!

1985-86 Durham College Women's Team

In keeping with our theme of celebrating Canada’s 150th Birthday and the history of sports in Durham Region we decided to recognize a historic team for this edition of Team of the Month.

The 1985-86 Durham College women's volleyball team, led by head coach Stan Marchut, became the first women's team ever to win a CCAA medal for Durham. At the national championship in British Columbia the Lords, who were the OCAA champions, advanced to the Final Four before eventually losing to Red Deer College in a heartbreaking five-set battle.

The Lords team that year stormed through the regular season with a perfect 14-0 record, dropping only three sets all season.

Keeping their momentum, they finished the OCAA pre-finals with a perfect 7-0 record advancing to the OCAA championships. In the final they defeated the Centennial Colts to advance to the national championship.

That season Durham was led by All-Canadian Carol Cruwys and league all-stars Pat Hayden. Leslie Seeley and Ann Stowell-Smith.
