2017 was the year of the Bears in Durham Region high school hockey.
The Brooklin High School Bears captured both the male and female Tier 1 AAA LOSSA titles this year and represented the region at the OFSAA Championships in Mississauga.
The varsity girl’s program at Brooklin High School got off to a strong start last year in their inaugural season making it all the way to the LOSSA finals before losing a close series to Sinclair.
In 2017 the girls came out flying and went the entire regular season without losing a game finishing 6-0-2 and capturing first place. The Bears continued their winning ways in the playoffs beating St. Mary in the semi-finals on the way to a rematch in the finals with Sinclair.
This year the Bears were on the winning side beating Sinclair two games straight. The team’s strength was its defence finishing the playoffs with three shutouts in four games. After their victory in the LOSSA playoffs the girls traveled to Mississauga to compete in the provincial OFSAA Championships.
The team was able to advance past the pool stage of the tournament before losing a very close 2-1 game in the quarter finals. The Bears finished the tournament with two wins and two losses with the losses coming against the eventual silver and gold medal winning teams.
The boy’s team also had a very successful season in 2017. The Bear’s dominated the regular season with an 8-1 record and carried their momentum into the playoffs. After knocking off Uxbridge and Maxwell Heights the team found itself in the finals against Pickering High School. After losing game one of the finals to Pickering the team bounced back winning game two before taking the LOSSA Championship in dramatic fashion in a sudden-death overtime.
